Niel Immelman - Professor at the Royal College of Music

Our Teaching Team

Niel Immelman studied with Cyril Smith, Ilona Kabos and Maria Curcio. He was still a student at the RCM when Bernard Haitink invited him to play Rachmaninov's Paganini Rhapsody with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. This successful debut was followed by further appearances with the London Philharmonic, the Royal Philharmonic and other major orchestras at the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and it marked the beginning of a concert career that has taken him to every continent.

Mike King is a singer, songwriter, pianist, vocal coach, musical director and producer. As well as being a successful artist in his own right, Mike has dedicated much of his time to nurturing the talent of others and making a positive impact through music.

Matthew Schellhorn - Pianist

Our Teaching Team

Selected as a 'Talent to Watch' by BBC Music Magazine, and described as 'a rising star' (BBC Radio 3) and 'one of Britain's most exciting young pianists' (Classic FM), Matthew Schellhorn has a growing international career, which in recent seasons has seen recitals in Europe, Ireland and North America.

Born in Yorkshire in 1977, Matthew Schellhorn studied in Manchester and Cambridge and later privately in Paris with Yvonne Loriod-‐Messiaen. He has been guest soloist at several international festivals, including the Three Choirs Festival, the Windsor Festival, the Presteigne Festival, and the Belfast Festival. He has given recitals in many major venues throughout the UK, including Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room at the Southbank Centre. He has performed live numerous times on BBC Radio 3, and in 2005 he was featured on Classic FM's The Guest List. As a concerto soloist he has worked with numerous conductors, including Jane Glover, Peter Stark, Russell Keable, David Hill, Andrew Fardell, Stephen Cleobury and Baldur Bronnimann, performing with orchestras including the London Mozart Players and the Ulster Orchestra.

Yvonne Zhou Yun - International Correspondent

Correspondent for China and Singapore

Yvonne Zhou Yun was born in Leshan, Sichuan, China in 1991. She has had a keen interest in music since her early childhood. When she graduated from primary school, she started to participate some bigger competitions all around China.

In July 2004, she won her very first big champion in Paris, from the 32nd French International Music Competition(group for age 13-16). After that in 2005, she won the 1st prize, at the music competition of 'Star Torch' Chinese Talented Teenagers Association in Beijing, as the highest scorer.

In 2006, she won the 1st prize of the 3rd 'Lira' International Music Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia.

In 2009, Singapore government offered her full scholarship so she started her college life in Lasalle College of the Arts.

In 2013, her talent has been found, she got the offer of the Royal College of Music, London.

Raymond Cheung - UK Correspondent

Correspondent for the UK

Raymond Cheung is a student at Goldsmiths College where he is currently completing a Certificate in Music Studies. He attended Grace Chan's 'Piano Performance' workshop from 2010 to 2012. He has participated and won prizes at numerous piano festivals including Coulsdon and Purley, Redhill and Reigate, Kingston and Sutton.

Raymond has a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Cambridge.

Simon Ngai Kai Tai - Composer

Mr Simon Ngai Kai Tai graduated in the Hong Kong Institute of Music. He followed Professor Wong Yuk Yee majoring in composition. His minor studies included Piano and Chinese Flute playing. He self-studied classical Guitar and Clarinet.

He won the First Prize of the 3rd Kwun Tong Classical Guitar Competition.

In 1984, he joined the Composer and Author Society of Hong Kong as an ordinary member and became a full member in 1990.

He has 40 or so classical compositions, including chamber music, songs, solos and concertos.

Erato Tse Nga Chee - Piano Teacher

Hong Kong- born Erato Tse Nga Chee graduated from Music Bachelor Degree and Diploma at Hong Kong Baptist University and became a passionate piano teacher in 2009.

In 2014, she completed MMus in Performance & Related Studies at Goldsmiths College, London University. Her lecturers included Professor Jakob Fichert and Mr kinwai Shum.

Apart from learning piano, Erato is also interested in composition and violin. She is now actively involved in music industry with extensive experience in solo piano performance, chamber music and piano teaching.

Diego Schlaeppi - Pianist

Diego Schlaeppi is in his final year of study on the BMus Performance course at LCM where he studies with Wilfird Murray. He has participated in masterclasses with Charles Owen, Bryce Morrison and Krassimir Taskov, and has regularly performed in concerts and competitions as soloist and chamber partner. He hopes to continue studies at postgraduate level and establish himself as a piano teacher and performer.

Katarina Kostrevc - Violinist

London-based Slovenian violinist and composer Katarina Kostrevc (born 1993) is currently studying in her final year of BMus Composition at London College of Music. She began learning the violin at the age of six and composed first short pieces for solo violin a year later. Katarina has collaborated and performed with many different musicians and orchestras all around Europe.

Jammy Smith - Piano Teacher

Jammy Smith began her music studies in Hong Kong when she was a teenager. Under the instruction of Grace Chan, Jammy finished both ABRSM Grade 8 Pianoforte and Grade 8 Music Theory with remarkable results. After finishing her graded piano studies, she continued taking piano lessons with Grace Chan until Grace moved to England. During those years, Grace sincerely encouraged Jammy to teach piano, and to continue her piano studies for the diploma. Grace was also the first one to introduce her Alexander Technique for piano playing and performance.

Sulhee Kim - Pianist

Sulhee Kim (piano) was born in Korea where she achieved a degree in Music. After teaching piano in Korea and Jordan for several years she came to England in 2011 and began a BA course in Music Performance and Music Management at the London College of Music, University of West London. She studies with Jeremy Davis and was awarded the Mona Blackman Prize for piano performance in 2014 and the John Ireland prize in 2015.

Grace Chan - Piano/Keyboard Educator, Tutor & Coordinator

Our Teaching Team

Grace is a pianist who was awarded three music scholarships in Hong Kong. She is an experienced piano teacher and academic researcher who has been teaching since 1981. She has offered private piano lessons and a wide range of professional piano courses and workshops, including: absolute beginners to diploma level both in Hong Kong and the UK.

In London, she has taught a variety piano courses including Access to Higher Education, Introduction to Music, Diploma in Music, (Intermediate Piano which was formally part of the Integrated Degree in Music course) and Certificate in Music Study (equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate music degree) at Goldsmiths College in the Professional and Community Education (PACE) Performing Arts and Music departments for many years. In 2012, she was nominated by many of her piano students for an excellent teaching award at Goldsmiths.

John Crawford - Latin Piano Tutor at Goldsmiths

IMA nominated musician John Crawford was born in London of English/Spanish Parents. His father played Blues piano, and this is the first thing he learnt to play. His mother would introduce him to Latin music of all kinds, and he has gone on to perform at Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Getxo Jazz Festival, Ronnie Scotts, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, the 606 club, and Royal Albert Hall amongst others. His 2012 release "Ulia River of Time" has been nominated in the USA by the Independent Music Awards for best album in the Jazz category.

Peter Bithell Diploma d'Onore, Accademia Chigiana, Siena - Piano professor at Guildhall and Drama

Our Teaching Team

Peter Bithell studies with Gordon Green at the Royal Academy o f Music and subsequently with Guido Agosti in Italy and with Maria Curio in London.
He won many prizes and awards at International Piano Competitions, notably Busoni (Bolzano), Reina Sofia (Madrid), Paloma O'Shea (Santander), Dubley, Marguerite Long(Paris) and the Rachmaninoff Prize in Italy.

Margaret Turner - ABRSM piano examiner

Our Teaching Team

Margaret is an experienced piano teacher and examiner, and has travelled abroad as well as all round the British Isles for ABRSM.

Piano playing is in the blood! Margaret always played as a child and a great deal at school too. This was followed by studies at the Royal Academy of Music where she also played the flute. The years were enjoyable with musicianship, musical understanding and particularly teaching experience being very helpful, especially in the final year.

Sharona Joshua - Teaches fortepiano, historic piano, harpsichord at Birmingham Conservatoire

Our Teaching Team

Israeli-born Sharona Joshua studied the piano with the late Professor Alexander Volkov and was awarded numerous scholarships during her studies at the Rubin Academy leading to a BMus degree in performance in 1995.

In 1993-4 she studied fortepiano in London with the late Christopher Kite after being awarded a further scholarship to spend a year at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

Graham Fitch - Pianist, teacher, adjudicator and writer

Graham Fitch maintains an international career as a pianist, teacher, adjudicator and writer. From 1997 to 2008, Graham Fitch was Head of Keyboard at the University of Cape Town, from where he travelled extensively to perform and teach. Graham was active as a recitalist and keynote presenter at four successive Australasian Piano Pedagogy Conferences from 1999, and has been in residence at London's Royal Academy of Music.

Wilfrid Murray trained originally at the Royal College of Music, studying Piano with Cyril Smith and Theory with Stephen Dodgson. After leaving college he continued lessons with Albert Ferber, played in various chamber and solo recitals and established a teaching practice in South-West London.

Peter Feuchtwanger, born in Munich. He studied piano with Gerti Rainer (a pupil of Emil von Sauer), Max Egger, Edwin Fischer and Walter Gieseking; composition with Hans Heimler (a pupil of Alban Berg, Heinrich Schenker and Felix Weingartner) and Lennox Berkeley; Indian and Arabic music and philosophy, amongst others with Nazir Jairazbhoy and Dr. Arnold Bake.

Philip Fowke - Pianist, Professor and Senior Fellow of Keyboard at Trinity College of Music (now is Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance)

Our Teaching Team

Philip Fowke taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London until the early 1990s when he joined the faculty of Trinity College of Music. Since 2000 he has been pianist with the London Piano Quartet which had a residency at the Dartington International Summer School.

Julian Jacobson MA, GRSM, ARCM - Professor of piano and chamber music at the Royal College of Music

Our Teaching Team

Julian studied at the Royal College of Music and Oxford University. He was Head of Keyboard Studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama from 1992-96. Since 2000 he is a professor of piano and chamber music at the Royal College of Music.
